Detail Information about Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek

Best Time

For the best experience and to minimize any associated weather issues, you must trek in the Everest region during the appropriate time of year.  The Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek excursion places you in the Himalayas above 5000 meters, where the weather can directly affect your trekking experience.

One of the good times for trekking is the spring season, offering clear skies with excellent views of Mount Everest and other majestic peaks. The daytime is very comfortable for trekking, while nights can be a little cold. Nature will be in its pinnacle form with lush, blooming rhododendrons and other flowers in the forest.

Another good time for the Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek is the autumn season. The weather is cool and stable, with crisp air. The trekking routes will be lively, and many trekkers will be heading to their own destinations in the Khumbu region. Due to optimal weather, the flights will be reliable. Winter can also be ideal for people who want to trek on peaceful routes.

During winter, you can see the snow-covered mountains and other landscapes, which are jaw-dropping. However, due to the extreme cold, only limited teahouses will be open this season. So, you need to wear warm clothes and bring the right gear with extra preparation for this season.

Fewer visitors come during the monsoon season due to drawbacks like muddy and slippery trails, blocked views due to thick clouds, and unpredictable heavy rains. There is also the risk of landslides while trekking. However, the monsoon also brings lush greenery with peaceful routes. If you dare to take risks and challenges, you can visit the monsoon season, too.

Elevation and distance

This Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek excursion will take you above five thousand meters, offering one of the most awe-inspiring vistas in the world at that altitude in the Khumbu region of Nepal. Your trekking starts at 2860 meters in Lukla, taking you through several Sherpa villages and passing across verdant forests and rivers.

During your acclimatization in Namche Bazaar, you will take side hike trips to Everest View Hotel at 3880 meters and Khumjung Village at 3790 meters, which will help you greatly in the upcoming trekking day in the higher altitude areas to adapt to the thinner oxygen levels.

The Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek’s main highlights are Kala Patthar, which is 5545 meters above sea level, and Everest Base Camp, which is 5364 meters.  Following your exploration of these locations, your route will veer to Gokyo Valley, where you will traverse Cho La Pass, one of the Khumbu region’s most difficult passes, which is located at an elevation of 5420 meters.

Gokyo Valley is located at an altitude of 4750 meters, where you can witness six main glacial lakes surrounded by the towering Himalayas. After that, you will explore the second-highest point of this adventure, Gokyo Ri, which stands at 5357 meters. Then, you will descend gradually, passing Dole village to reach Namche Bazaar and finally to Lukla.

Besides this, you will trek around 136 kilometers or 84.5 miles roughly from start to end in the Everest region during two weeks of trekking out of 19 days. You will trek roughly 65 kilometers or 40.4 miles to reach Everest Base Camp from Lukla. Similarly, you will cover 13 kilometers from Dzongla, passing through Thangnak via Cho La Pass to reach the Gokyo Village.

Difficulty and altitude sickness

The Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek is undoubtedly a very tough, challenging trek due to the isolated region, steep paths, high elevations, rocky terrain, and uneven paths. You will need to walk an average of five to six hours, while on some days you need to walk around seven to eight hours, which can totally exhaust you.

Without strong determination and willpower to make the urge to keep going, it would be hard for you to trek on this thrilling adventure. That’s why training and preparation are crucial to stay motivated and keep going while trekking in the mountains. Another difficult part that adds more challenge is the altitude of the destinations that you are trekking.

No matter how trained or experienced you are, anyone can get acute mountain sickness (AMS) if extra precautions and safety measures are not taken while trekking in high-elevation places. This is why our Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek package includes acclimatization in Namche Bazaar to help your body adapt to thinner oxygen Level areas.

If symptoms like nausea, loss of appetite, insomnia, tiredness, and difficulty breathing are seen, then you should take this seriously and descend to the lower region if it keeps getting worse. Our guide will also be there to help with any conditions.

Another factor that creates difficulty is bad weather. Thus, choosing the best season can minimize this problem for a successful Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek adventure.

Maximum and minimum walk per day

To finish this Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek journey successfully, you must be in good shape and in tremendous good health. The medium hours of trek you will embark on will be about five to six hours on a daily basis in the mountains of the Everest region.

You can expect minimal hours of trekking on days 3, 5, and 12 when you trek to Phakding Village from Lukla, go on a short hike to Khumjung Village and Everest View Hotel, and trek to Gokyo from Thangnak Village.

Similarly, the maximum number of hours of hiking you can expect on days 9 and 11 when you trek to Everest Base Camp from Gorak Shep and then return again, and when you trek to Thangnak Village from Dzongla, crossing the Cho La Pass.

Accommodation, Food and Drink

After arriving at Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes Trek, you will be transferred to a three-star hotel in Kathmandu, which offers standard facilities and services. There would be teahouse accommodations in the Khumbu region while trekking with limited amenities. Only low-altitude regions like Namche Bazaar and Phakding offer luxurious-style services.

You can upgrade your accommodations according to availability in the Everest region for an extra amount. The dining area in the teahouse is spacious, with a fire to keep you warm. All three-course meals are provided while trekking. Any additional meals at any time from this will be your expense.

The teahouse prepares food options like dal bhat, veggies, pancakes, oatmeal, Tibetan bread, soup, pasta, momos, and many more. Some teahouses also cook western dishes, especially in the lower areas. Healthy and clean foods will give you full energy while you are trekking in the mountains.

Preparation and fitness

Trekkers should be physically fit to finish the trek in the Khumbu region. Even though there are different routes to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes, each trekking route demands serious preparation and body fitness. Without proper training for the Gokyo Lakes Trek to Everest Base Camp adventure, this journey would be more of a burden and struggle than an adventure.

If you don’t prepare 2 to 3 months before, your excursion will be the most challenging journey you have ever had. You should focus on training to improve your stamina, endurance, and strength, such as cycling, jogging, swimming, and trekking nearby hills into your daily routine.

Training is beneficial for your body as it will be able to withstand any physical challenges, such as sore muscles incurred after long treks. Trekking to Everest must be slow and steady, and one must have the proper acclimatization days in order to prevent altitude sickness at Everest Camp, Kala Patthar, Cho La Pass, and Gokyo Lakes.

Check your Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek packing list and get quality gear to ensure a smooth hiking experience. This is the only way to make this exciting journey work for you and efficiently complete the several days of trek.

Health and Safety Measures

When you ascend to higher levels, altitude sickness can be a recurring problem for anyone above 3500 meters tall. You may get yourself dehydrated while walking for long hours. So, to prevent yourself from such a disaster, you should drink plenty of water and carry water purification tablets all the time for the sake of your well-being.

Acclimatization is crucial to the Everest Base Camp Gokyo Trek to ensure your body adapts appropriately in high-altitude locations. If your flight has a lousy climate schedule, it will be delayed. So, you should have buffer days in your schedule and avoid unnecessary risks.

Transportation

We will meet you at the airport on the first day of your Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes Trek adventure and drive you in a private vehicle to your three-star accommodation.  The next day, you will go in our vehicle with a guide to tour the Kathmandu Valley.  Additionally, we will fly to Lukla, which is covered by our plan.

If you want to experience better aerial views, you can upgrade your flight to helicopter mode with an additional amount in the package. If you have more time in Nepal, you can tour Chitwan, Pokhara, and Lumbini in our private vehicle, extending your package.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance in the context of the Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes trek is a must.  It is supposed to include the provision of safety for the high-altitude trek, health emergencies, and helicopter evacuations. The Himalayas are indeed heavenly, yet particularly unreliable, and may pose hazards, for example, altitude sickness and severe weather.

The insurance also compensates in the case of trip cancellations, lost luggage, stolen belongings, flight delays, and even entanglement into legal issues. It caters to accidents that might happen when trekking and getting involved in other adventurous pursuits. Ensuring that you have insurance should be your major concern which will allow you to enjoy the journey stress-free.
