Introduction of Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri
The standard EBC trek can get a little crowded, especially during the peak travel season. This Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri is a great alternative route, offering a great and unique experience in comparison to starting the trek from Lukla. Sitting at an elevation of 2390 meters above sea level, Salleri is the administrative center of the Solukhumbu region. This town is about 165 km from Kathmandu and takes about 8 to 10 hours to reach via ground transportation.
This trek route offers insights into the traditional life of the Sherpa people since we will be passing by many Sherpa villages, along with a couple of Tamang and Rai villages. The warm welcome of the locals will surely please you, and their traditional dishes might get you hooked. Other than that, the Sherpa people are known to be somewhat resistant to the harsh conditions of the Himalayas, which is why most of the guides and porters in Nepal are Sherpas.
The scenes throughout the Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri will surely leave you wanting more. The diverse landscape, ranging from sub-tropical lush forests to barren alpine vegetation, offers a range of different scenes. During the initial day of the trek, you will enjoy the lush vegetation, green hills, and river, with a distant view of the Himalayas. As we make our way up to 5000 meters of elevation, you will not see even a single tree. The scene is now dominated by rocks, ice, and snow, with bright blue sky.
In recent days, efforts have been made to connect Lukla via roadway to lessen the reliance on flights only. However, no noticeable progress has been achieved. Until the day of the completion, a drive to Salleri remains the only other alternative to flying to Lukla. Even after its completion, the Salleri route remains a better option since it offers a more scenic route and an intimate trekking experience with fewer people on the road.
To learn all about this alternative Everest Base Camp, keep on reading this detailed trek package breakdown.

Detail Information about Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri
How does our trip start?
On the 1st day of the trek, we will get on a jeep to drive all the way to Salleri town. This drive will take around 9 hours to complete, having us spend the night in Salleri. The next morning, we will grab a relaxing breakfast and start the trekking days of the Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri. This trek will take us to Nunthala.
Difficulty
The standard EBC trek is considered a moderately difficult trek; this alternative itinerary adds a couple more days of trekking, making it a moderately challenging trek, also known as a strenuous trek. Normally, you would fly to Lukla to start the trekking days, but this Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri takes you on a drive to Salleri, which adds 3 more days of trekking. However, it follows the standard itinerary after we reach Namche Bazaar.
On a scale of 10, Nomad Adventure’s expert guides have given it an 8. Highly experienced trekkers might find it to be an easy trek, but an average trekker will experience the strain of the route for sure.
Best seasons
The best seasons for the Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri include autumn and spring. Both of these seasons offer great trekking conditions with mild daytime temperatures and chilly nights, which can drop to zero degrees Celsius at times. Many festivals are celebrated in these seasons, offering you a great chance to experience the local customs and culture. In addition to that, the weather stays clear for the most part with very low chances of rain.
In general, you should avoid the winter and monsoon seasons as the rewards they offer are not worth the unsuitable conditions you bear to complete this trek. In addition to that, heavy rain and snow can keep you from progressing forward, making you lose a whole day of progress or even more.
Altitude Sickness
The risks of altitude sickness during this trek are not that high, but there are slight chances. Altitude sickness usually starts from 3500 meters above sea level, but at such a low altitude, the effects it has on the human body are not that damaging. You might feel a slight headache and be nauseous, which can be cured in an instant. However, after we cross the 5000-meter mark, the seriousness of altitude sickness grows.
At such a high elevation, altitude sickness holds the power to stop you from progressing any more, ending your Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri on the spot. However, we will follow all the preventive measures that should keep us safe from the illness.
Accommodation, Food and Drink
Accommodation during the entire Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri will be on a twin-sharing basis, meaning you have to share a room with one of the fellow trekkers in the group. We can also arrange private rooms for your entire journey, at a price. All your standard accommodation expenses will be covered by the trek package.
Your food options include a mix of traditional, local, and international dishes. Options like sandwiches, spaghetti, pizza, burgers, pancakes, etc., are found at most of the lower region villages, while the higher altitude regions offer mostly traditional and local meals.
Transportation
All the transportation expenses (as per the itinerary) will be covered by the Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri. This includes a drive to Salleri at the beginning of the trek and a flight from Lukla to Kathmandu at the end of the trek. We will also pick you up and drop you off at the airport, free of charge.
Permit
This alternative itinerary requires the same permits as the standard EBC trek. Trekkers are required to have a Sagarmatha National Park permit and a Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit. Both these permits are a part of the Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri package.
Trip preparation and fitness
The best way to prepare for this trek is to focus on cardio exercises and go on short hikes. Your main aim must be to build your stamina and strengthen your leg muscles, you do not need to focus on any other areas. The minimum training period is 8 to 10 weeks.
Cost & Budget
The Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri will cost you USD ________ per person. If you request some modifications or upgrades, this price will change, depending on the changes to the standard package. This package covers most of your daily expenses, including accommodation, meals, local taxes, wages for the crew members, insurance for the crew members, permit fees, and more.
Gadgets charging & Internet
The best option for internet during any Everest region trek is to get an Everest Internet Card, which is priced around USD 30. This internet service is much more reliable in comparison to the ones you get in tea houses and other eateries along the way. Gadgets’ charging is sometimes interfered with by power outages, which happen all over the country. However, most villages have solar power as their backup source, which can be used to charge your devices. This service comes at a price.
Your Extra expenses
Although our standard trek package covers most of your expenses, it is just not practical for the package to cover all your expenses. Thus, there are some things that you must pay for separately. This includes paying for personal travel insurance, extra meals, additional or upgraded accommodations, tips for the crew members, emergency medical services, and more.
Things to Remember Before Trekking to The Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri
- If you want to experience the trek from Salleri, but do not want to spend 9 hours traveling by road, you can opt for a flight to Pharphu instead.
- The Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri features long ascents and descents, which are physically demanding, so prepare yourself well.
- Rest/acclimatization days are very important since they allow your body to adapt to the extreme Himalayan conditions, keeping you safe from altitude sickness.
- The tea houses en route offer basic facilities only; do not expect a high standard of services from them since getting goods and services to the remote villages is a hassle.
- Internet connections are limited and unreliable, and so is cellular network connectivity.
