Introduction of Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek 19 days
The 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is one of the least-traveled trekking destinations of Nepal since the region is not as spoken about or as widely advertised. Most people are not aware of this amazing long trek; the views along the way are just stunning, the natural setting, and the people you meet along the way. Everything about this trek is worth your effort and time.
The trek takes you to the absolutely remote settlements along the Koshi valley. So remote that you will not see any other buildings other than the settlement you are staying in. This remoteness gives the villages their appeal, making you feel closer to nature than ever. But this also means that you are going to spend days without internet, a shower, and outside communication.
That is why you must mentally prepare yourself before you get on the road to start this 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek. We will stop at villages like Ghunsa, Ramze, Khambachen, Lhonak, etc., where you will love along the locals. Primarily the villages are home to Rai, Limbu, and Tamang ethnic groups who are known for their friendly and welcoming nature.
Although you may not have internet for days, you will not have to worry about being bored. The smiley locals will interact with you, ask you to join in on whatever they are doing, or just have a chat with you if they can speak your language. While most of the people in the region have not received any formal education, a handful of villagers in each village are capable of communicating in English.
During your trekking day, you will eat what the locals have prepared, stay in their lodges, and be in their care. You just have to enjoy the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek while our guides and porters take care of the rest. Your daily meals will be managed by our guide while your heavy bags will be carried by the porters.
There are many other things that go into making a successful Himalayan trekking experience. Here are the essential things that you need to know before you take the trek.

Detail Itinerary of Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek 19 days
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1324 m)
Arriving in Kathmandu is the very first day of your 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek. As you fly over the hills of Nepal, you will be able to see the mountains standing majestically in the north. After your flight reaches the airport, you will be directed to the immigration section of the terminal where you have to get your tourist visa.
For this you must have your passport with you, 2 passport-sized photos, a bank receipt of visa fee payment, return tickets, and proof of residence. You can get the bank receipt after paying your visa fees at the bank counter nearby.
The counter accepts international VISA cards and MasterCard’s but sometimes they might not work, so it’s always best to have some hand cash with you. Even if you do not have to use your cash reserve, you can use it later on the trek.
After you exit the terminal, our representative will be waiting for you. He will welcome you and guide you to your hotel for the night. You can take an evening stroll around if you have the energy to do so.
Usually, people just want to sleep after a long flight to Kathmandu, which is a good thing since you need to rest fully for the upcoming 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek.
Activity: Drive for 35 Minutes
Max. Altitude: 1,324m/4,344ft. Kathmandu
Accommodation: 3 Star Hotel
Day 2: Trek Permit Preparation Day (1324m)
Permits are the most essential documents for any trek, without it, you will be returned back by the authorities or fined. The Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project Entry Permit (KCAP) are the only two permits required for this trek. These permits are obtainable at the Nepal Tourism Board Office in Kathmandu, our trek guide will assist you through the process of getting one.
After we are done sorting out the permits, we will go on a short day tour around the valley of Kathmandu. Since we will be starting our 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek tomorrow, it’s a great choice to go on a short hike to get our leg muscles warmed up. We will be trekking up to Nagarkot and then to Changunarayan Temple.
First of all, we will travel to Sankhu by jeep, it’s about 17 kilometers from Kathmandu which takes approx 45 minutes to reach. This small town is a great showcase of the intricate Newari architecture and is full of temples. It’s a great location to explore but we have a hill to climb so we will not be wandering around for long.
The trail to Nagarkot begins from Shankhu (sometimes called Shankharapur), the initial portion of the trail is slightly sloped up while we pass through terraced farmlands. This hill is largely inhabited by Tamang people, much of the hill is covered by trees while the open lands are farmed. Making our way through the settlement we will reach Nagarkot in about 3 hours.
The 2175-meter-high viewpoint of Nagarkot is a beautiful place to stay, there are multiple lodges at the top since people usually stay there for sunrise views early in the morning. You can also see peaks including Ganesh Himal, the Annapurna Himalayan range, Manaslu, Langtang, Everest, and more. It is the best viewpoint near Kathmandu.
After catching our breath for a while, we will get on the road to Changunarayan temple. This 2nd leg of the hike is pretty easygoing since the majority of the trail goes downhill. At the ending portion, we will have to hike up a little to enter the gate of Changunarayan temple. This part of the hike lasts around 2.5 hours.
The temple of Changunarayan is dedicated to the great Lord Bishnu, one of the three holy trinities of Hindu mythology. It is believed to be over 1500 years old and has been inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From there we will get down to Kathmandu Valley via a jeep since walking back would take at least 2 hours. All in all, the trek to Changunarayan would take about 5 to 6 hours, a great preparatory trek with great views to enjoy.
Alternatively, you can go for a shorter trek to Nagi Gumba (2 to 3 hours trek). The starting point for this trek is Budhanilkantha. From there, we will enter the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park after buying an entrance ticket. The trail to Nagi Gumba goes through the well-marked trail inside the park where different animals and birds roam around freely.
The uphill hike to Nagi Gumba should take no longer than 3 hours. Our destination sits on the north side of Shivapuri Hill, this monastery is full of nuns and only nuns. They are called “aani” in Nepalese which basically means female monks. The monastery is very calming and the vibe is peaceful with the nuns chanting prayers and the incense sticks refreshing the air.
We will spend some time at the monastery before heading back to the valley. The way down the Shivapuri Hill might take around 45 minutes to an hour. In total, you will spend about 4 hours hiking.
Activity: Drive & Sightseeing for 4-5 Hours
Max. Altitude: 1,324m/4,344ft. Kathmandu
Meal: Breakfast
Accommodation: 3 Star Hotel
Day 3: Morning flight to Bhadrapur (50 minutes), then Drive to Taplejung (1800 m)
On the following day of the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, we will get on an early morning flight to Bhadrapur, which lasts about 50 minutes.
Bhadrapur is the commercial hub of eastern Nepal, and given its roadway connection to the different cities in the region, it’s often traveled to. After we reach Bhadrapur, we will get on a jeep to Taplejung. This road trip should last about 9 hours, covering a total distance of 216 kilometers.
We will take a road trip to Taplejung instead of a flight since flights are very infrequent and are often postponed owing to bad weather conditions. We do not want to take the risk of postponed flights since it means that you will have to stay the night in Bharadpur; you lose a whole day of action.
Starting from the plains of the Terai region, we will slowly make our way to the hills of Illam. From there, we will reach Phidim, where we will stop for lunch and shortly continue the drive to reach Taplejung.
We will also stop in Illam for a photoshoot session. There are multiple roads that lead to Taplejung, but the fact is that every one of them is windy and takes a lot of time to traverse.
Activity: Flight & Drive for 9-10Hours
Max. Altitude: 1,800m/5,906ft. Taplejung
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 4: Taplejung to Sekathum (1600 m)
Day 4 of the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is yet another driving day as we drive from Taplejung to Sekathum, covering 39 kilometers within 4 to 6 hours.
Since the road condition to Sekathum is the worst you will encounter in this trek, the mere 39 kilometers take hours to cover. Some parts are paved while some are gravel, dusty roads.
The starting portion of the road from Taplejung is in good condition, but as you go further into the hills, the roads just give up.
Activity: Drive for 4-6 Hours
Max. Altitude: 1,600m/5,249ft. Sekathum
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 5: Sekathum to Amjilosa (2310 m)
Today is the first trekking day of the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, we will take you from Sekathum (1600 m) to Amjilosa (2310meters). Since it is our first trekking day, we will not be covering much distance, our total trek time will be under 5 hours.
Following the curves of the Ghunsa Khola, the trail starts with a series of ascents and descents which grows to become a theme throughout the day. We will pass through forested areas and a number of suspension bridges that are perfect for a little bit of adrenaline. The lightly swinging suspension bridges are a perfect spot to take wide photos of the rivers and hills.
The hills throughout today’s trek are dominated by bamboo, rhododendrons, and different species of pine trees. Those hills are home to a plethora of birds and the rare Red Panda. Since the number of Red Panda is minimal, sighting one while trekking is a rare event, however, sighting different Himalayan birds is a frequent theme.
Activity: Trekking for 5-6 Hours
Max. Altitude: 2,310m/7,579ft. Amjilosa
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 6: Amjilosa to Gyabla (2730m)
Amjilosa is a tiny Tibetan village covering a hill slope. This tiny settlement is enough to provide trekkers with a couple of tea houses for accommodation. The services in these tea houses are very basic, and one should be grateful that they even have such establishments in such remote areas. It’s a wide village and the views are worth the stay there.
Starting the trek from 2510 meters at Amjilosa village, our final standing of the day will be 2730 meters at Gyabla. These villages are just 8 kilometers apart, but we will be gaining elevation, which makes it harder to cover distances even if they are short. Today’s trek will last about 5 hours.
The forests on the way are primarily covered by oak, rhododendron, and bamboo trees that are home to multiple species of birds. Bird sightings are frequent, and at some point, one will stop paying attention to them; it’s just that much.
Gyabla village practices animal rearing more than anything; Goats, yaks, sheep, etc., are very common in the village, they are mostly sold for money and rarely eaten by the villagers themselves.
Activity: Trekking for 4-5 Hours
Max. Altitude: 2,730m/8,957ft. Gyabla
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 7: Gyabla to Ghunsa (3475 m)
We will start the 7th day of the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek at Gyabla. This village is a tiny settlement sitting at 2725 meters above sea level. Sometimes called Kyapra, the village is a major force in animal exports in the region. From Gyabla, the trail ascends slightly as we move out of the village, and there are more ascents and descents waiting for us on today’s trek.
Starting from 2725 meters of altitude, our final altitude of the day will be 3417 meters above sea level. The trail itself is 11 km long, which should not take more than 5 hours to cover.
As we move up the valley, the Tibetan cultural influence grows stronger. Traditional Tibetan-style houses, Chortens, and Gompas become a frequent sighting.
Activity: Trekking for 5 Hours
Max. Altitude: 3,475m/11,401ft. Ghunsa
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 8: Ghunsa to Khambachen (4146 m)
Day 8 of the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is a special day as we will cross the 4000-meter mark with views of the nearby peaks right in our faces.
The trail is 11 kilometers long and we will have to trek about 6 hours to cover it. As we are above 3500 meters, we must be steady with our pace and not rush to new heights, taking it slow is the best way to avoid altitude sickness.
The trail starts with a slight ascent as we follow the path of the Ghunsa River. As we move up, we will see peaks such as Mt. Nagphu, Kumbhakarna, Nupchu, and Sarphu ranges. The village of Khambachen is always praised for the views and it also doubles as a sunrise viewpoint.
Activity: Trekking for 5-6 Hours
Max. Altitude: 4,148m/13,609ft. Khambachen
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 9: Acclimatization and Rest Day
Acclimatization is the key preventive measure every trekker should follow if they do not want altitude sickness, especially if they are going into a higher Himalayan region the next day. The reduced oxygen content in the air makes it harder for trekkers to get enough oxygen in their blood, so spending an extra day just getting used to the environmental conditions is not an option but a necessity.
Sitting at 4145 meters, the village of Khambachen is a great viewpoint and a resting place. A rest day not only safeguards you from altitude sickness but also allows you the explore the Himalayan village and get re-energized throughout the day as you recover.
Climbing high and sleeping low is the best mantra to avoid altitude sickness, which is why we will take you on a short acclimatization hike to Jannu viewpoint. It’s about 9.5 km from our accommodation and takes just 3.5 hours.
We will reach 4559 meters of altitude at the summit of the Jannu viewpoint, which is just an amazing place to reach. The views are more than incredible, with wide scenes of the valley and mountains.
Alternatively, we can also go on a Nupchu Pokhari exploration hike. This Himalayan pond is considered sacred by the locals, and it is a well-kept secret in the region. A trip to Nupchu Pokhari will cover your whole day; the way to the pond takes about 5 hours, and the way back to our accommodation is about 3 hours of hiking. In total, we will hike for 8 hours during this side expiration journey.
We understand that you might just want to rest and hike as little as possible. In that case, we il climb a little hill nearby for an overhead view of the surroundings.
If you are up for it, the Nupchu Pokhari hike is worth every bit of the 8-hour hike; the views it has are just overwhelmingly good. You can see a wide view of peaks, including Mt. Nupchu, Sarphu, Naghu, Kanchenjunga, and Jannu.
Activity: Rest Day
Max. Altitude: 4,149m/13,612ft. Khambachen
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 10: Khambachen to Lhonak (5200 m)
The 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek up to now was pretty great but getting to Lhonak is a day you will remember. This truly remote village seems like it was set up just for trekkers because why would someone live in such a secluded region?
The trek starts at an elevation of 4146 meters and takes us to 5200 meters above sea level. The initial portion of the trek ascends slightly as we walk past dry and rocky barren land with giant mountains as our background. We will follow a stream that originates from the Kanchenjunga glacier.
We will soon reach Ramtang village, which is an avalanche-prone area, our trek guide will assess the danger and lead the way for you to follow.
Walking along the Kanchenjunga glacier we will make it to Lhonak in about 5 hours of total trekking. The isolated settlement of Lhonak is appealing in the sense that you are away from any civilization which makes an intimate connection to nature.
Activity: Trekking for 4-5 Hours
Max. Altitude: 5,200m/17,060ft. Lhonak
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 11: Hike to Kanchenjunga North base camp (Pang Pema) (5143 m) and return to Lhonak
The ultimate day of the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek has come, day 11 is when we will make it to the Kanchenjunga North base camp, also called Pang Pema. Hike to the base camp and back will cover about 9 km which should take approximately 7 hours to complete.
Starting the hike to the base camp, we will travel alongside a glacier moraine which turns into a rugged and barren scene shortly after. With small patches of tiny bushes scattered sparsely, the trail continues to ascend while scenes of the Kanchenjunga Himalayan range are viewable all along. All of the 5 peaks of the range become more dominant as we hike up to the base camp.
Remember to follow the pace set by our trek guide and always keep yourself hydrated; we are climbing to 5143 meters above sea level which is a risky region for altitude sickness.
After we reach the base camp, we will first get to see a wide view of the Kanchenjunga peaks, so close that it feels reachable by hand. The north face of Kanchenjunga is the one we will see from base camp while the Kangbachen Peak and Ramtang Peak accompany the scene. We will spend some time at the flat base camp and hike back to Lhonak to sleep.
Activity: Trekking for 6-7 Hours
Max. Altitude: 5,143m/16,873ft. Lhonak
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 12: Lhonak to Ghunsa (3475 m)
Day 12 of the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is the first day of descent. We will start the descent after a heavy breakfast and a last look at the Lhonak village.
First, we will get to Khambachen, our lunch stop. Going along the Kanchenjunga glacier, it will take about 4 hours to reach there. This part of the trek is full of blue sheep, one of the few animals that can survive in this region. We will have our lunch at Khambachen and continue the descent.
From Khambachen, we will get on the trail to Ghunsa; this part of the trek is also about 4 hours long. As we get back to Ghunsa, the treeline starts showing up, and forests of oak, pine, rhododendron, and bamboo are dominant throughout the trek. Covering a total of 21 km over a period of 8 to 9 hours, we will reach our destination of the day.
Ghunsa is the biggest village we will visit throughout the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek. It is the hotspot of the region, housing the Tashi Choding Monastery, which is over a hundred years old. Every morning, a number of locals pray at the monastery while the monks living in the monastery engage in their morning prayers, chanting sacred Buddhist hymns.
Activity: Trekking for 7-8 Hours
Max. Altitude: 3,475m/11,401ft. Ghunsa
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 13: Trek to Sele Le Base Camp (4290 m)
Approximately 6.3 kilometers apart, today we will gain over 800 meters of altitude in just 6 hours. As we leave Ghunsa, the trail takes a windy shape as we go through lush forests of different trees. The trees frequently give way to the views of the nearby peaks. As we gain altitude, the landscape changes and the treeline begins to disappear.
Getting higher, the trail becomes more uneven and full of rocks. As we get closer to Sele Le Base Camp, the trail leads us to an open space with views of distant peaks. The base camp is where trekkers passing the Kanchenjunga mountain passes stay for the night.
Activity: Trekking for 5-6 Hours
Max. Altitude: 4,290m/14,075ft. Sele Le Base Camp
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 14: Trek from Sele Le Base Camp to Tseram (3870 m)
From Sele La Base Camp to Tseram, we just have to trek 9 km in total but this will take about 6 hours because of the rugged trail. The trail starts with an ascent to Sele Le Pass going up to 4115 meters above sea level. From the top, you can see a wide panoramic scene of the entire surrounding. After that, we still have to cross 3 more mountain passes before we reach Tseram.
First off, we will get to Sinion La Pass which is 4440 meters high, second on the list is Mirgin La Pass (4480 meters), and lastly, we will cross the Sinelapche Bhanjyang which reaches 4646 meters of elevation. Only after we pass these trails, will we be able to descend down to Tseram which is why it takes a lot of time to cover 9 km.
After hiking up to Sinelapche Bhanjyang, we will start descending through the tree line, a forest appears soon enough where everything is covered in moss, the oak trees, the huge rocks, everything. We will reach Tseram shortly afterward and check in at our accommodation.
Activity: Trekking for 6-7 Hours
Max. Altitude: 3,870m/12,697ft. Tseram
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 15: Trek from Tseram to Ramze and Hike to Oktang (Yalung South Base Camp Viewpoint, 4730 m) and back to Tseram
The trek from Tseram to Ramze is just 4 km but takes about 2 hours to climb. The trail starts with a slight ascent following the Simbuwa River’s path. The trail is accompanied by a river on one side and a forest on the other. Hiking up, we will reach a dry valley, free of ice and snow, from there, views of glaciers and the Himalayan landscape are a must-see.
Continuing the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, we will get to Ramze village (4620 meters). The village houses a small monastery that is the religious center of the locals.
From Ramze, the trail to Oktang is just 3 km long (one way), but given the harsh environmental conditions and the rugged trail, it will take about 5 hours to cover this distance back and forth.
Moving up with the outlines of Yalung Glacier, the trail leads to glacial moraines and small patches of grass where shepherds are often seen with their cattle. As we approach the Yalung South Base Camp Viewpoint at 4740 meters of altitude, the view of the south face of Kanchenjunga becomes apparent, while the nearby peaks accompany the scene.
After a long break at the base camp, we will make our way back to Tseram. In total, we will cover about 14 km over 9 hours of trekking.
Activity: Trekking for 7-8 Hours
Max. Altitude: 4,730m/15,518ft. Tseram
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Guest House
Day 16: Trek from Tseram to Tortong (2980 m)
Hiking out of Tseram, we will travel across a forest of pine and rhododendrons to get into the sub-alpine vegetation. The trail takes us down along the Simbuwa River, the sounds of the river and birds chirping are the best ambiance you can ask for.
After about 13 km of trekking, we will make it to Tortong, ending a 6-hour hike.
Activity: Trekking for 6-7 Hours
Max. Altitude: 2,980m/9,777ft. Tortong

Difficulty
The 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is categorized as a challenging trek, and we can absolutely see why. Trekkers have to cross 6 different passes, hike up to 2 different base camps, and spend weeks in remote regions where proper civilization has yet to reach.
On a scale of 10, our experts rate it a solid 9. It could be a 1,0, but our trek guides and porters are there to help you along the way.
Best seasons
The best seasons for the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek are autumn and spring, followed by summer. All of these seasons offer great views of the surroundings, but the summer season can be a little too hot, while the other two offer mild temperatures.
The hot summer can provide warmth in the cold Himalayas, but the chances of cloudy days and rain also increase.
Altitude Sickness
Although we reach altitudes well over 5000 meters above sea level, we do not spend a single night at that altitude. Climbing high and sleeping at high altitudes is a direct invitation to altitude sickness, which is why we will climb high and sleep low. Following the directions of our trek guide, you are highly unlikely to get altitude sickness.
Accommodation, Food and Drink
Accommodation throughout the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is very basic except in cities like Kathmandu and Kanyam. Once we get going over the hills, we will primarily be staying in tea houses.
The food and drink options are also limited to what is available (seasonally), do not expect to get a long list of food options at the eateries along the trek.

Every bit of transportation required by the 19 Days Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is arranged by us and covered by your trek package fee. This includes the flights and road transport along the itinerary we have proposed.
