Introduction of Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek 19 Days

The Manaslu Tsum Valley trek is known for its extraordinary trekking experience in Nepal where stunning natural beauty meets a rich cultural heritage filled with ancient art and picturesque villages.

The Tsum Valley trek with Manaslu circuit provides an intriguing and very peaceful atmosphere that attracts many adventurers every year. 1991 saw the opening of the Manaslu circuit trek, but it was not until 2008 that the Tsum Valley trek was revealed to the world.

The Manaslu Tsum Valley trek will take you to the Gorkha district of Nepal in its northern corner along the course of the Shiyar Khola. The Tsumbas, the original inhabitants of the Tsum valley fondly call their home the hidden Valley of Joy and Happiness.

This community has very deep-rooted unique age old Tibetan Buddhist customs who have their own distinct dialect, and attire. They practice a polyandry marriage system but the youths are now steering away from this traditional custom.

Saka Dawa, Lhosar, and Dhacyhang are their main festivals, and they are celebrated in the numerous remnants of historic Buddhist monasteries, stupas, and chortens.

The entire 19 days Manaslu Tsum Valley trek route traverses the deep jungles of Manaslu Conservation area that shelter several rare and endangered wildlife species.

Thus, the region’s distinctiveness, culture, inhabitants, and wildlife have led to its designation as a restricted area that needs a special permit to regulate the number of visitors each year.

Our 19 days Manaslu Tsum Valley trek itinerary will direct you from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. The progressive days will be followed by a series of activities such as hiking, sightseeing, and exploring remote communities.

From Chumling onward, you will find yourself deep in the remarkable environment of the Tsum Valley. You will discover the Mu Gompa, founded by the venerated Bhutanese Lama Drupa Rinpoche, Rachen Gompa- the all-nunnery monastery, the cave of Milarepa, and numerous other architectural treasures.

Once you complete the Tsum Valley trek, you will then move onward along the Manaslu circuit route starting from Lokpa, following the Budhi Gandaki River.

The journey will at last take you atop the 5106 m high Larkya La Pass after which you will exit the Manaslu trail and walk for a short while along the Annapurna trail of Dharapani from where you will transport to Kathmandu.

Don’t disappoint mountain lovers as the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek route will offer you exclusive mountain views through the journey that will thoroughly please you.

    You will be able to directly look at Annapurna Himal (8091 m), Cheo Himal (6820 m), Manaslu (8163 m), Gorkha Himal (6092 m), Himlung (7126 m), Shringi Himal (7187 m), Ganesh Himal (7422 m), Himalchuli (7893 m), Naike (6211 m), Larke Peak (6249 m), Kanguru (6367 m), Pang Chuli (5663 m), and Ngadi Chuli (7871 m).

Thus, our Manaslu Tsum Valley trek is a complete adventure in itself which is moderate in nature and perfect for those who are searching for adventure as well as a stronger connection with the culture and nature.

    itinerary-icon

An early morning wake up and we will set forth to begin our incredible Manaslu Tsum Valley trek. We will leave the bustling capital of Kathmandu in a private jeep and drive through Kalanki, Thankot, and follow the expansive Prithvi Highway to Malekhu.

The west-turned Highway will journey us down to Trishuli and for a while follow the course towards Pokhara. Later, our driver will turn us north to Dhading. The tarmac road of the Highway will now conclude thereby taking us along the narrow dirt track to Dhading Besi.

Slowly, the white heads of Ganesh, Manaslu, Annapurna, and Langtang can be seen emerging above the hills as we proceed to the Arughat Bazaar of the Gorkha district.

We will travel further north and traverse the attractive small villages of Maltar, Shante, Arkhet, and Kyoropani before reaching Soti Khola. Before the motor road, it used to be the resting spot of travelers heading to Manaslu.

But the road has advanced further so we will drive for around 2 hours further through Khursane and Labu Bensi to finally rest at Machha Khola. Here, we will enjoy the hospitality of Sarki, Damai, Chhetri, Tamang, Brahmin and Gurung community.

From here on, Shringi Himal will begin to guide us from the distance. We will continue to walk up steadily through Dobhan Khola Valley towards the Yaru Khola Valley where we will have to walk over a 92 km long steel bridge.

Now, the path will meander through Thulo Dhunga and lead us to the Gurung hamlet of Jagat which grants us entry into the new environment of the Manaslu Restricted Conservation Area.

The winding forest path will now take us to the Lokpa Hamlet of the lower Tsum Valley. It rests calmly at the joining point of the Siyar Khola and Budhi Gandaki River. Gajung Kang and Shringi Peaks are the two astounding attractions of this locality.

The time of a big trek over the Larke or Larkya La Pass of our Manaslu Tsum Valley trek has arrived. We will rise early and head out while it’s still dark as a good part of the pass may still be under snow and so the descent can be tricky and slow.

Our pass trail begins gently along the eastern side of the Larke Glacier. Soon, the trail will be steep and rocky. The final stretch of about 100 meters will be a bit challenging, but reaching the top will be totally worth it.

The Kanguru, Himlung Himal, Gyaji Kang, Nimjung Peak, Cheo Himal, and Annapurna I and II will offer their impressively attractive views atop the pass. Now, we will have a bit of one more uphill climb to the second pass.

Next, a long steep descent of around 600 m awaits us after which the trail will level out. Walking along the moraine wall, we will pass through the expansive grasslands of Larke Kharka and then make our way to Tanbuche Village (3900 m) by the Salpudanda glacier.

Detail Information about Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek 19 Days

Why Tsum Valley and Manaslu are designated as Restricted Regions?

The Nepalese government has classified the Manaslu circuit and Tsum Valley as restricted areas for important reasons. These stunning areas are habitats for endangered animals like the rare snow leopard and the charming red panda, along with numerous unique plant species.

Additionally, the region is very near to Tibet border from where the illegal crossing can take place. The Nepal government is also focused to preserve the authentic culture of the innocent Tsumbas who are not that attached to outside world.

The over development, and mass tourism in the area can lead the region to the similar fate as of Everest and Annapurna. Thus, the restriction in trekking to these areas are in place to control the flow of visitors every year.

Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek: Best Season

You will change dramatic change of climate in our 19 days Manaslu Tsum Valley trek. You will feel the charm of the tropical climate in the lower areas while the mid-elevated areas will give you a temperate climate.

The higher zone on the other hand will offer you the coolness of the alpine weather. Thus taking into view of these variations, the best trekking time for the Manaslu and Tsum valley trek is the season of autumn/fall.

September, October, and November bring in the pleasant heat of 15 to 20 degree Celsius accompanied by the brightest blue sky. March, April, and May introduces spring in Manaslu and Tsum Valley with heat of 25 degree Celsius and vibrant colors in every jungle and landscape.

The rain starts to wet the Tsum Valley and Manaslu in June, July, and August and places like Larkya La Pass often get a lot of snow with the directing trail turning into a wide river.

On December, January and February, a lot of frost and heavy snow cover the Tsum Manaslu area which makes the pass difficult to cross.

Tsum Valley Trek with Manaslu Circuit: Difficulty Level and Challenges

The Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek is of category three level which means the trek is of moderate nature. However, there will be incredible heights to overcome between the journey including the 5106 m elevation of Larkya La Pass.

Therefore, altitude will be one of the important factor playing the significant role in this adventure. The Manaslu Tsum Valley trek route is also a mix of steep inclines, slopes, ascents ad descents which need a particular attention of hikers.

Another element to be considered is the duration of walking that can span up to 8 hours sometimes. You should also expect temperature variations, as sunny weather can quickly turn into chilly winds, rain, or even snow.

However, the Pass crossing and the ascents will be gradual not requiring any technical expertise. But, remember that overnight accommodations in the villages may not be as comfortable or luxurious as you are used to in Everest or Annapurna.

Eligible Participants of 19 Days Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek

The Manaslu Tsum Valley trek is suitable for all individuals who are in good health, regardless of their experience with high-altitude trekking. The route does not need the expertise of technical knowledge nor any gear.

In addition, the walking track although not asphalted has been made well by the efforts of the local populace and the authorities. They are also well signposted so there is no way you will get lost.

The approaching route to the Larke Pass is also carved along the cliff that is commonly used by the locals for their mules. So it is pretty manageable, however, the duration of trekking will be quite hard for you.

All in all, the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek route is well suited to beginners and experienced hikers.

Acute Mountain Sickness/AMS/Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization

Altitude sickness is main concern on our 19 days Manaslu Tsum Valley trek itinerary. There is a rapid transition to the altitude of over 4500 m which can be tough on human body as it tries to adjust to less oxygen air.

Our 19 days Manaslu Tsum Valley trek itinerary includes important acclimatization breaks, like a rest day at Mu Gompa (3710 m) during the Tsum Valley trek and another at Samagaun on the Manaslu circuit.

We have also planned shorter walking hours in the days before reaching the pass so it will be easier for you to tackle its height without any discomfort.

However AMS can effect not all hikers but some manifesting the minor signs of headaches, dizziness, vomiting and fatigue. Diamox and a lot of water intake can help you fight these symptoms.
