Introduction of Tsho Rolpa Trek

The Tsho Rolpa Trek is a rewarding journey into the peaceful Rolwaling region of eastern Nepal. This trek is perfect for those who wish to enjoy scenic mountainous views, rustic villages and a less-traveled trekking path. The route passes through the Valley of the Rivers, forests and open alpine terrain until finally reaching the renowned Tsho Rolpa Lake. En route, the quiet trails, fresh mountain air and the hospitality of the local communities can be enjoyed.

The landscape gradually shifts from green hills and woods to rocks and glacial terrain as the journey goes on. Crossing through traditional Sherpa villages where people live their normal lives and practice their Buddhist religion. The route is characterized by its cultural elements: colourful prayer flags, monasteries, stone houses and mountain farms. No rush: New vistas, new walks every day.

The Rolwaling Valley Trek is a well-rounded experience in nature and culture. Suspension bridges, waterfalls, pine trees and grazing yaks pastures present ever-changing scenery, with rhododendron forests as the main feature. Further up the trail, the valley is broadened and the surrounding snow-covered peaks seem much closer. Overnight villages like Simigaon, Dongang, Beding and Na provide you with a chance to stay for the night and gradually acclimate to higher elevations while enjoying the local lifestyle.

The best time of the trip is when you arrive at Tsho Rolpa Lake (4,580 m / 15,026 ft). The great glacial lake is surrounded by rocky hills, glaciers and majestic peaks of the Himalayas which create a quiet mountain view. The track also goes through Na Village (4,183m/13,724 ft) which is the last community before the lake. A brisk walk lets you take in the scenery and get accustomed to the elevation.

The Tsho Rolpa Trek is a moderately difficult trek that is recommended for those who are reasonably fit. The walks are mostly in the forest, on stone paths or in alpine areas and typically take between 4 and 7 hours each day. The ideal times are the spring and autumn seasons, when weather is generally settled and the mountain views are best.

From beginning to end, Nomad Adventure Treks ensures that you experience this adventure in the Himalayas with confidence, thanks to well-planned logistics, experience and reliable local support.

This is a drive of about 6-7 hours depending on the road conditions.

Once at Chet Chet, you start climbing a rather level trail. The route traverses through forests, rocky steps and small villages until arriving at Simigaon, a typical Sherpa village. Further along the road, the area is more tranquil and there are fewer settlements. After some hours walking, you reach Dongang, a small village surrounded by forested hills. Usually a quiet spot where trekkers rest before ascending to higher heights. Stay the night at a local lodge and enjoy the quiet mountain setting.

Today we are walking along a beautiful mountain valley by the side of the Rolwaling River. It is a trail that leads through thick woods, across suspension bridges and, finally, above the tree line. As one rises, there is a gradual transition into an open alpine landscape with increasingly more mountain views.

You reach the largest Sherpa settlement in the Rolwaling Valley, the village of Beding, by afternoon. The villages also have ancient monasteries, prayer flags and traditional stone houses which bear witness to the vitality of the Buddhist culture in the area. On clear days, impressive views of nearby snow-covered peaks surround the village. This is where you’ll spend the night before heading up to higher elevations.

The valley is an open expanse of breathtaking beauty with a superb view of the surrounding mountains and rocky cliffs.

In about 4-5 hours, you arrive at Na. It is a small seasonal village that is primarily occupied by yak herders. It is a tranquil village, the last stop before the Tsho Rolpa lake. Once you’ve arrived, you can enjoy the serenity of the lake and snap some photos of the deep blue water with the dramatic mountains in the background. After visiting, you return the same route to Na for another night. There is more opportunity to enjoy the scenery when the return hike is undertaken.

This track goes through yak pastures, alpine meadows and rocky areas before descending to lower altitudes.

The friendly spirit and the traditional Sherpa culture of the village can be felt again as you make your way back to Beding. The afternoon is available for rest, exploration of the settlement or a visit to the local monastery before spending the night at the lodge.

Detail Information about Tsho Rolpa Trek

Weather and Best Season

The Tsho Rolpa Trek can be undertaken during most of the year, but the preferred seasons are during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Typically, there are no shifts in the weather; temperatures are nice and sunny and views of the mountains are clear in these months. Spring also marks the onset of the blooming rhododendron forests and autumn provides fresh air in the wake of the monsoon.

Experienced travellers should expect to experience winter conditions at higher altitudes, including temperatures that fall below freezing in many areas around Na Village (4,183 m / 13,724 ft). Heavy rainfalls and muddy trails are likely in lower regions during the summer monsoon. Always consult the current weather forecast and plan for changing weather conditions in the mountains before traveling.

Difficulty and Altitude Sickness

The Rolwaling Valley Trek is considered a moderately challenging trek. On most days, you will be walking on rocky trails, forest paths and an alpine environment for approximately 4-7 hours. With good fitness and experience walking regularly, you will enjoy the trek.

The track heads to the Tsho Rolpa Lake (4,580 m / 15,026 ft) where the chances of experiencing altitude sickness increase. It is important to have enough water while exercising, to drink enough water while working out and to get a good night’s sleep when walking. If you get a severe headache, dizziness, nausea or difficulty breathing, tell your guide right away. Early attention will help prevent more severe problems associated with altitude.

Insurance, Visa and Permit

We recommend that you have travel insurance that includes trekking up to (4,580 m / 15,026 ft), emergency medical treatment and helicopter evacuation in case of need before joining the Tsho Rolpa Lake Trek. This can provide additional security if you fall sick or encounter an emergency.

Nepal tourist visa is required by the majority of foreigners coming to Nepal and can be obtained from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) or before entry into Nepal. Rolwaling region trekking permits are also required. In advance of your trek, Nomad Adventure Treks will make the required permits and guide you with all documentation.

Health and Safety

Good preparation is important for a safe Tsho Rolpa Trek. Have a personal first aid kit, use treated water, have a balanced diet and keep warm at night. Weather conditions on the mountain can change at a moment’s notice: bring waterproof gear and warm clothing.

Follow your guide’s directions and don’t walk too far out in front. Some trails can become slippery following rain and some trails are rocky and extra care is needed. If you are feeling unwell or have symptoms of altitude sickness, let your guide know right away. Well-planned and sensible choices make travel safer and more enjoyable.

Transportation

The trek of Rolwaling Valley starts with a beautiful drive from Kathmandu to Chet Chet (which takes 6-7 hours depending on the road conditions). The path tracks along river valleys, through small towns and passes through hillside villages until it reaches the trailhead.

Once you have reached the end of your trek, you walk back to Chet Chet and then take a drive back to Kathmandu on the same route. Private transport is more comfortable and shared local transport can sometimes be provided. No matter which package you select, Nomad Adventure Treks arranges transportation between Kathmandu and the trekking route smoothly and conveniently.

Your Extra Expenses

In the Tsho Rolpa Lake Trek, the fees of most of the standard packages include accommodation, food on the trek, permits and guide services. You should have some extra cash for personal needs en route, though.

Some extra fees are for hot showers, charging of batteries, internet, bottled water, snacks, laundry and tips for guides and porters. There are few facilities in the small villages along the way and electronic payments are rarely offered. Before leaving Kathmandu, it is advisable to have a sufficient amount of Nepali currency to cover expenses on the trek because ATMs are not available along the trail.

Language and Communication

People living along the Tsho Rolpa Trek mainly belong to the Sherpa and Tamang communities. Nepali is commonly used and there are also local dialects which are also used in villages throughout the Rolwaling region.

Many tour guides, lodge owners and tourism workers understand basic English and it’s fairly easy to communicate with the people who are out there for trekking. Learning some basic Nepali greetings is also always welcomed by the people of Nepal and helps in building friendly interactions. When you are respectful and polite and learn the customs, it makes traveling as a trekker more fun.

Mobile Network, Internet and Charging Facilities

In some of the lower villages, there is mobile phone coverage in the Rolwaling Valley Trek which decreases with altitude. This signal may change according to weather conditions and exact location.

Internet facilities are limited and may only be available at a few lodges and at an additional cost. Electricity is generally available at teahouses to charge electronic devices, but the power might be generated from solar energy in higher villages, so charging may not be available at all. It is advisable to have a fully charged power bank, so that devices can function during the entire journey.

Don’ts on this Trip

The Tsho Rolpa Trek goes through peaceful villages, monasteries, forests and sensitive mountain environments. Respect local customs, dress modestly and ask permission before taking photos of people and religious sites.

Avoid littering on the trail, harming wildlife or picking plants and rocks from protected areas. Do not use water from streams that has not been treated. Do not deny health issues that are associated with altitude sickness or any reason to discontinue the ascent. Sustainable trekking is a way of safeguarding the natural beauty of the Rolwaling Valley for future generations.

Cultural Festivals on the Trail

The Rolwaling Valley Trek is located in villages where Buddhism is still a significant part of their lives. Along the way, one will see prayer flags, monasteries, mani walls and chortens.

If the visit coincides with the local calendar, festivals may be seen like Dumje or Losar, the Tibetan New Year. During this celebration, the local communities pray, play music, perform their traditional dances and hold family events. The dates for festivals are subject to change every year since they are based on the Tibetan lunar calendar. Respectful observation and enjoyment of the cultural atmosphere are welcomed, respecting local customs.

Tips for First-Time Visitors

When it is your first trekking experience with Tsho Rolpa, make it a habit of walking or light hiking for several weeks before the trek. Well-made walking boots, multi-layered clothing, a rain jacket, sunglasses and sunscreen are required. You must bring a water bottle to drink from.

Walk at a steady pace, drink plenty of water and give your body sufficient time to acclimatize to the higher elevations. Don’t over-pack or overstuff your backpack to keep it comfortable. Pay close attention to your guide and honor local customs on the way. With proper preparation and a positive attitude, you will have a beautiful experience during this Himalayan trek.
